Monsignor Gary Secor-Honolulu Cathedral
Very Reverend Monsignor Gary L. Secor
Monsignor Gary Secor was born on April 16, 1951 in Berkeley California to Don and Alice Secor. At about 4 months old, he came to Hawaii with his parents and was raised on the Windward side of Oahu. He attended St. Anthony’s Grade School and Maryknoll High School. He went on to attend St. Stephen’s Seminary and Chaminade University and graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. He attended St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park California (Master of Divinity Degree in Theology) and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Honolulu on August 13, 1977. He has three sisters, all younger than he, who live in the Vancouver Washington area and his parents reside in Lanikai on Oahu.
His priestly assignments have included: Associate Pastor of St. Anthony’s in Kailua, Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Honolulu, Pastor St. John’s Mililani, Pastor at Holy Trinity Church in Honolulu, and Vicar for Clergy in the Diocese of Honolulu. He is currently Vicar General of the Diocese of Honolulu, Moderator of the Curia, and, for the second time in his career, is serving as Rector of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace.
In December 2016, Pope Francis named Father Gary Secor a Chaplain to His Holiness, elevating him to the title of Monsignor, an honorary title given to priests who are outstanding in their witness to Jesus and their service to the people of God.
In collaboration with Bishop Larry Silva and a team of dedicated volunteers, Msgr. Gary is leading the Cathedral Renewal Campaign, a $15,000,000+ effort to fully renovate, restore and preserve the 175 year-old Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in downtown Honolulu.
Msgr. Gary enjoys being a pastor, working with youth and young adults, and all the blessing of being a priest. His interests include hiking and reading.
