HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Our club responded to the rallying cry: IMUA! Forward...there is no turning back! We accomplished a lot in the first half of this Rotary year! We inducted NINE 9!! new members: Emma Miyaki, Jon Brunhold, Peter Ehrhorn, Michael Malaghan, Tomoko Malaghan, James Pierce, Sharon Moriwaki, Fred Brooks, and Alejandra Rodas!

In July our club participated in the Genki Ball Ala Wai Clean-Up Project with the Eco Rotary of Kakaako.

We collected school supplies for keiki at local schools and the Waianae Vet Center.

Later in November, together with the AOK foundation, Evan Knight ED, we constructed and assembled yard furniture for the Waikiki Community Center.

We provided a wonderful Thanksgiving lunch for seniors at the Center.

For the keiki we collected for the Marines Toys for Tots

while our Youth Service Chair taught keiki how to help in the community with a beach clean up.

We partnered with Rotary Sunset in inaugurating an Interact Club at La Pietra School for Girls,

We are delighted and honored to have fellow Rotarian from Rotary Club Gelsenkirchen-Schloss Horst (http://gelsenkirchen-schloss-horst.rotary.de) in Germany, Professor Dr, Alexander Zureck as our speaker at our zoom meeting this coming Wednesday, February 1 at noon. Dr. Zureck grew up in Gelsenkirchen where his family are still living. He works in Düsseldorf. This region of Germany is known as its economic heart with the headquarters of Thyssen Krupp (elevators) or Aldi (mostly known as Trader Joe’s in the US)....who knew that??

Dr. Zureck's business focus is on education, finance, digitization, and real estate.

Dr. Zureck was in Hawaii to present the insights of a study at #IICEHawaii organized by The International Academic Forum (IAFOR).

The study found that women and immigrants were at a disadvantage due to their lack of financial literacy. The study aims to support those involved in finance (business people, etc.) to better understand the needs of students attending FOM Hochschule für Oekonomie & Management (University of Applied Sciences for Economics and Management). The majority of students at FOM are working professionals. The range of courses offered centers on business, business administration, economic psychology and engineering. The FOM, founded in 1993, has close relationships with many major German companies.

This study was part of the PhD project of Thomas Hammer, MBA that Mr. Hammer was doing under Dr. Zureck's supervision.
