PDG Laura Steelquist-The Rotary Foundation

Laura Steelquist

Rotary International District 5000

District Governor 2014-2015  laura@himed.cc

Laura Steelquist has been a member of the Rotary Club of East Honolulu since 1997.  She served as Centennial President in 2004-2005.  She was District Secretary in 2005-2006, Assistant District Governor for the seven East Oahu clubs in 2006-2007, District Membership Chair for 2007-2008, and District Secretary for 2008-2010.  She was one of the organizers for the Global Peace Forum held in Honolulu in 2013.  After serving as District Governor in 2014-2015 she served as District Finance Committee Chair from 2015-2017 and is currently District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair (DRFCC).  She and Dave Hamil are the Volunteer Coordinators for the Host Organizing Committee for the 2020 Rotary International Convention to be held in Honolulu.

Laura was raised in Denver City, a small town in west Texas (think Last Picture Show and Friday Night Lights), got her B.A. in Economics at Baylor University (where she also met her husband John) and M.S. in Economics at Texas A&M.  Daughter Leilani was born in Waco and son John in Sacramento.  John and Laura and the kids did some extensive traveling thanks to the U.S. Air Force before arriving back in Hawaii in 1981.

Laura owns and manages Hawaiian Islands Medical Corp.  The company was built on the principles of the Four Way Test.  They provide durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs and hospital beds – anything people need to enable them to safely and comfortably remain in their homes.

Laura joined Rotary because she accompanied John, who was then President of East Honolulu, to the International Convention in Glasgow, Scotland.  The trip was highlighted by a presentation on Polio Plus and Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio worldwide.  Chicken skin and tears!  How could anyone not belong to an organization with such incredible goals?   She joined East Honolulu because sponsor Lisa Foster asked her to.  She continues her dedication to Polio Plus.  She and John have participated in National Immunization Days (NID) in India, Ethiopia, and Ghana.  Laura and John are major donors, Bequest Society members, members of the Paul Harris Society, and Sully Sullivan Fellows.  She and PDG John (2010-2011) are the first PDG couple in District 5000.

PDG Laura has been a member of the Rotary Club of East Honolulu since 1997.  She served as East Honolulu’s Centennial President in 2004-2005.  She has served District 5000 as Assistant District Governor for East Oahu, District Membership Chair, District Secretary and was District Governor in 2014-2015.

Laura was raised in Denver City, Texas, got her B.A. in Economics at Baylor University and M.S. in Economics at Texas A&M.  She also got her husband John there (cute guy from Hawaii with a great sports car).  Daughter Leilani was born in Waco and son John in Sacramento before the whole family returned to Hawaii in 1981 at the end of John’s Air Force career.

Laura manages Hawaiian Islands Medical, a durable medical equipment company she owns with husband John.  Their company is operated on the principles of the Four Way Test.

Traveling and reading and her three grandsons are Laura’s favorite pastimes.

Laura joined Rotary because she accompanied John, who was then President of East Honolulu, to the International Convention in Glasgow, Scotland.  The Convention was highlighted by a presentation on Polio Plus and Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio worldwide.  She continues her dedication to Polio Plus and has participated in National Immunization Days (NID) in India, Ethiopia, and Ghana.  Laura and John also made many new Rotary friends when they attended District Conferences in Japan and Egypt in 2010-2011 when John was District Governor.  They are the first DG couple in District 5000.

She and John are major donors, Paul Harris Society, White Hat Society and Bequest Society members – they believe in the good works done through The Rotary Foundation.
