Brief Introductory Bio on Bradley A. Coates
BRADLEY A. COATES is an experienced divorce attorney who has practiced extensively in the Hawaii
Family Court system for the last 39 years. A graduate of the University of Southern California and UCLA School
of Law, Mr. Coates was the founder and senior partner of Coates & Frey, the largest divorce and family law firm in
Hawaii. He now serves as Of Counsel to the firm.
Mr. Coates also founded and administers the low cost divorce mediation clinic “Divorce with Decency”.
He has been a popular lecturer for decades here in Hawaii on the topics of divorce and family law, analyzing and
improving marital relationships, and the “ripple effects” of divorce on families and society. Throughout the last 30
years, Brad was a popular columnist for both the Honolulu News and the Oahu Island News and he appeared
regularly on local radio and TV programs. He has also lectured on the both mainland and internationally including
over 15 years of traveling to over 100 countries as the featured speaker and “relationships expert” aboard Princess
Mr. Coates has been named Hawaii’s “Best Divorce Lawyer” by the readers of both Honolulu Weekly and
Honolulu Magazine. He has also been repeatedly selected as one of Hawaii’s SuperLawyers. He estimates that he
and the ten attorneys in the Coates & Frey firm have successfully completed nearly thirty thousand divorce cases
during the last three plus decades.
In 1998, Brad published an award-winning book on the divorce process through the University of Hawaii
Press entitled, Divorce with Decency: The Complete How-To Handbook and Survivor’s Guide to the Legal,
Emotional, Economic, and Social Issues. That edition of Mr. Coates’ book won the Hawaii Book Publishers
Association Award of Merit for Excellence in Guide and Reference Books. The Second, Third and Fourth Editions
of Divorce with Decency also sold out and now a brand new and extensively expanded and updated 5th Edition was
just released. Mr. Coates’ newest book includes entirely new and invaluable sections which provide key tips on
preserving, improving and possibly “saving” marriages as well as the changing faces of love and marriage in the
Internet Age.
