Rotary On The ROAD @ the State Capitol

 

There will be no regular meeting at the Pacific Beach Hotel next week, 15 March.  Instead, we have planned ROTARY- ON -THE- ROAD at the State Capitol meeting Rep. Gene Ward, and Rep. Bob McDermott.

 We will meet at the “open area” of the State Capitol at 11:45 a.m. for a tour. Rep. Bob McDermott is buying lunch at 12:45 at the  Minority Caucus Room. There is room for 35 people for this visit and will be on a first-come first served basis.

Representative Gene Ward is a Vietnam Veteran who served as a translator-Interpreter. In the House from 1990-1998. He served in USAID Office of Democracy and Governance and promoted democracy throughout the world after writing text on the ills of campaign finance for developing countries. He has written a number of articles about business and politics and recently authored a text on campaign finance and a Commentary for the Honolulu Advertiser: Money in Politics: published by USAID in English & Spanish. During his time in the Peace Corps as a country director Gene Ward supervised the humanitarian efforts of 46 Peace Corps volunteer, 18 staff and $1 million budget in East Timor. Representative Gene Ward returned to Hawaii was once again elected to the House of Representative in 2006.

Representative Bob McDermott is serving his 6th term in the State House of Representatives; his service was 1996-2002 representing Foster Village-Aiea, and 2012 to the present serving on behalf of Ewa Beach. A Marine Officer and Veteran of Desert Storm, McDermott came to Hawaii in 1982 as a young enlisted Marine. Met his wife (UtuFa'asili) at Chaminade University and began their family in 1987, they have eight children and have been married for over 30 years. Upon completion of Desert Storm, Bob and Utu came back home to Hawaii. He worked in the coffee industry as a distribution manager, a college instructor, and finally Executive Director of the Navy League for 12 years; his highlight of the Navy League employment was serving as Dave Livingston's "man-servant." The McDermott family are practicing Catholic's and members of our Lady of Perpetual Help. Bob has been a Rotarian since 2004 and is know for his exemplary attendance!
