HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Our club responded to the rallying cry:  IMUA! Forward...there is no turning back!  We accomplished a lot in the first half of this Rotary year!  We inducted NINE 9!! new members:  Emma Miyaki, Jon Brunhold, Peter Ehrhorn, Michael Malaghan, Tomoko Malaghan, James Pierce, Sharon Moriwaki, Fred Brooks, and Alejandra Rodas!  In July our club participated in the Genki Ball Ala Wai Clean-Up Project with the Eco Rotary of Kakaako.  We collected school supplies for keiki at local schools and the Waianae Vet Center and we got down and dirty helping Rotary’s Centennial Park in Waikiki.

We welcomed medical professionals from Ukraine and welcomed members of our Japanese sister clubs who supported us in our fabulously successful Extravaganza fundraiser in October at the Oahu Country Club!

Later in November, together with the AOK foundation, Evan Knight ED, we constructed and assembled yard furniture for the Waikiki Community Center.

We provided a wonderful Thanksgiving lunch for seniors at the Center. and participated as hosts in the Salvation Army lunch at Blaisdell.

For the keiki we collected for the Marines Toys for Tots while our Youth Service Chair taught keiki how to help in the community with a beach clean up.

We partnered with Rotary Sunset in inaugurating an Interact Club at La Pietra School for Girls, with Elaine Batacan as the school's mentor for the group.

We had inspiring and informative speakers

Our service year ended with our partnering again with the Salvation Army and Metro Rotary in the Angel Tree giving event.

We ended the year having FUN, as it is always fun at the Waikiki Rotary, with a Christmas Celebration!

and this New Year: Look out for the RUMMAGE SALE at Waikiki Elementary School Saturday,  February 25!
We acknowledge Punahou School for the photograph "Rhythm of the Strokes."

22 Mar 2023 Meeting - Waikiki Yacht Club

Guest speaker Alexander Silvert was raised in New York City and Vermont. After graduating from UCLA and driving a cab in New York, and a year of post-graduate political science courses at New York University, he switched to Boston College Law School where he obtained his JD in 1984. He worked as a state and federal public defender in Philadelphia before moving to Honolulu in 1989 with his wife and three-week old son to work at the Hawai‘i Federal Public Defenders Office. He served as the First Assistant FPD from 1992 to his retirement in October of 2020. During his tenure he handled numerous high publicity cases, including representing two defendants in potential federal death penalty cases. In 2000, he was one of several AFPDs named “Federal Defender of the Year” by the National Association of Federal Defenders. In July of 2013, the author began his representation of Gerard Puana, who was charged with destruction of a mailbox owned by Honolulu Chief of Police Louis Kealoha and his wife, Katherine Kealoha, third-ranked City of Honolulu Prosecutor. The case continued for over seven years, with the author starting as defender and ending as the key instigator of the federal prosecution of the Kealohas in what has become known as the greatest public corruption case in the history of Hawaii. In October of 2020 Silvert retired as a Federal Public Defender after 33 years. Silvert has written a book about the Puana/Kealoha case entitled “The Mailbox Conspiracy: The Inside Story of the Greatest Corruption Case in Hawaii History.” Silvert currently is a lecturer at the University of Hawaii Richardson School of Law and runs his own private federal criminal law consulting firm in Hawaii.
